Spread the love

There is nothing quite like the taste of apples and cinnamon, and this apple scones recipe brings those flavors together to make something truly delicious! Mom would make these when we were little. I have fond memories of these apple scones. Of coming out of my room to the smell of sweet apples and spicy cinnamon. The sound of the teapot making our favorite tea and grandma and mom laughing and talking. Such sweet memories!

Scones are originally connected to England, Ireland, and Scotland but who made the first one, I’m not sure.

What Are Scones Called In England?

In England, it would be called a biscuit.

What Is A Scone?

A scone is a type of bread that can be sweet or savory. The dough is sticky before cooking. You do not roll out scones with a rolling pin but use your hands to form it. It is a bit on the outside but moist on the inside.

How Do I Get My Scones To Rise And Be Fluffy?

Do not make your round of dough too thin.  Also, make sure that you put your scones into a properly preheated oven.

I Can’t Eat Sugar, Can I Still Make This Recipe?

Yes, you can replace the sugar measure for measure (1.1 ratio) with SWERVE

Can You Make This Recipe Gluten-Free?

I have not tried it but Bob’s Red Mill All-Purpose Gluten-Free Flour can be tried to replace the flour in this recipe. It is a measure for measure flour (1.1 ratio).

Do I Have To Use Organic Ingredients?

No, you can just replace them with what you have on hand at a 1.1 ratio. This means if it calls for 1 cup of organic flour, you would use 1 cup of regular all-purpose flour. The same with the rest of the ingredients.

Directions:

Place 8 Tablespoons worth of butter in the freezer.

Lower your oven rack to middle or low and preheat oven to 400 F.

Measure your flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt into a large bowl.

Remove the butter from your freezer and grate on the largest setting into the flour mixture.

Use your fingers to work the butter into the flour once it is all grated.  You don’t want to over-mix this dough it will be tough and dry. Add your chopped apples.

In a separate bowl measure your yogurt and egg.  Whisk this until it is a smooth consistency.  Grab a fork and add this to your dry ingredients.  Then use your hands to finish mixing it and make it into a ball in your bowl. Dough may feel a bit sticky- it is ok.

Remove the ball and place on a lightly floured cutting board and press down on the top flattening it and making a circle of dough that will be about 8″ and it is about  3/4″ thick. Sprinkle this with remaining sugar and cinnamon.

Taking a sharp knife cut the circle into 8 triangles.

Place the triangles on a baking mat or parchment paper on a cookie sheet about an inch apart and bake for 15-17 minutes depending on your oven.

Remove and enjoy! Serve with butter or clotted cream and jam.
