Where Did The First Tart Come From?
Some say that tarts started in medieval pie making and that the first came from Italy dating to the 1500’s . Others say that it came from French sisters Stephanie and Carolin Tatin, that ran a hotel (Hôtel Tatin in Lamotte-Beuvron) in the 1880s with the name being Tarte des Demoiselles Tatin” or the tart of two unmarried women named Tatin.
Can I Make This Apple Tart Gluten-Free?
Yes! you would have to use these gluten-free graham crackers instead of the regular ones in the recipe.
Can I Make This Recipe Sugar Free?
I’m sure you could but you would have to make the graham crackers from scratch with a SWERVE type of natural sugar replacement product or purchase these sugar-free graham crackers. We have not tried this but it would be easy.
It is Difficult To Make A Tart?
This recipe uses a graham cracker crust instead of a flake pastry one so it is super easy.
What Is The Difference Between A Pie And A Tart?
A pie can be sweet or savory and have one or two crusts. A tart is sweet or savory and has one puff pastry shell on the bottom and an open top. The tart is thinner than a pie.

Ingredients
- Apples:
- 3 large Pink Lady apples
- 1/2 cup raw sugar
- 1 teaspoon apple pie spice
- Crust:
- 2 Tablespoons raw sugar
- 1 teaspoon apple pie spice
- 2 packages of Gram Crackers
- 3 Tablespoons grass-fed butter melted
- 2 egg whites
- Filling:
- 1 8- oz. package cream cheese (at room temperature)
- 1 Teaspoon vanilla
- 4 Tablespoons sugar
- Directions:
- Slice apples into thin wedges, place in a bowl with 1/2 cup sugar, and 1 teaspoon apple pie spice. Gently mix until the apple slices are covered, and set aside.
- Blend the gram crackers in a food processor until only small crumbles remain, add melted butter, 1 teaspoon of apple pie spice, and 2 egg white. Blend again until combined.
- Press crumbles into a tart pan, make sure the bottom and sides of the pan are covered. Bake at 350 for 10-12 minutes or until edges are browned.
- In a standup, mixer combine cream cheese, vanilla, 4 tablespoons sugar, and the last egg white. Mix until smooth.
- Spoon the filling over the bottom of the crust.
- Beginning at the edges lay sliced apples with the skin facing up. Work in one direction slightly overlapping apple pieces until the entire tart is covered.
- Place in the fridge for 1 hour or overnight and serve.
