Cheese Bread

We have seen this cheese bread done when dining out and wanted to give it a try.  It is a showy boule or oval cheese loaf that would be great for when you are having company over for dinner.  The bread is flaky on the outside and soft and chewy on the inside. Fresh chives are sprinkled over it for the flavor. This cheese bread would be great to serve with soup where you can simply tear off pieces to dip in your soup or served before a meal as hors d’oeuvres.  Would be fantastic with an alfredo sauce dip, simple pasta sauce or even in some good olive oil and balsamic vinegar with salt and pepper. Anyway you serve it this bread is delicious!

Instructions For Cheese Bread With A Bread Machine

  • Put the water, sugar, and oil in the bread machine.
  • Follow with flour, salt, and yeast.
  • You can either set the bread machine to “French” or “dough” (I use dough that way I can take it out and shape it into a round loaf, an oval loaf or a plain loaf.)
  • If you choose the dough setting after you shape it into the desired shape then place it on your baking sheet.
  • Leave the dough to rise in a warm place covered by a flour sack towel until it looks like it has doubled in size.
  • Preheat oven to 350 F.
  • Place an ovenproof ramekin or another ovenproof dish with water in the oven with your bread to provide moisture.
  • Bake at 350 F for 25 minutes or until your loaf is golden.
  • Remove the bread loaf from oven and slice the top part of the bread in a crosshatch design with a sharp knife leaving the base of the bread uncut.
  • Stuff the sliced spaces with melted butter or olive oil, sprinkle with a touch of garlic powder and salt, add grated cheese and diced-up fresh chives
  • Place back the bread back in the oven for 10-15 minutes or until melted. Serve this hot from the oven.
  •

Cheese Bread By Hand

  • In your bowl add liquid ingredients (oil and water) that have been warmed (not hot) with your sugar.
  • Sprinkle your yeast on top and cover and let set in a warm draft-free place in your kitchen till bubbly.
  • Slowly mix in the remaining dry ingredients.
  • With a spoon or fingers start mixing until combined fully.
  • Let your dough rise in a greased bowl for 20 minutes and cover with a light cloth then begin kneading.
  • Let the dough rise again.
  • Pull it out of the bowl shape it into whatever shape you want or place it in a bread pan and let rise again.
  • Bake at 350 F  for 25 minutes.
