We made this coney sauce a few days ago and it’s been a huge hit here at the Cottage, and at Mr. Cottage’s work. His co-workers begged us to send a batch with Mr. Cottage for their BBQ Monday. We did, and let’s just say there were no leftovers. This recipe is super easy and fun to add variety to your hot dogs!
What is Coney Sauce?
It is a delicious beanless beef chili served on hot dogs from Coney Island, Michigan.
Why Is Coney Island Called Coney Island?
The most popular story is that the old Dutch spelling for rabbit in Conyn from a large number of rabbits that lived on the island at the time making it “Rabbit Island”. It was later Anglicised to Coney.
What Is On A Coney Hot Dog?
A beef hotdog with a beef beanless chili sauce, mustard, and diced onion.
Coney Sauce
1 1/4 pounds ground beef browned and drained
1 medium onion
1/2 cup raw sugar
1/2 cup chili powder
1/2 catchup
1 1/2 cups water
Place all ingredients in a pan.
Simmer for an hour and serve.
