Welcome to the Rosevine Cottage and our Cottage Garden. We love our sweet garden and are excited to share our hard work with you. We have worked over 20 years on our Cottage Garden starting with Grandma Cottage all the way to us, her granddaughters who have carried on the torch and lovingly care for her passion and hard work.
The beautiful delphinium put on a big show when the weather warms and the sunshine hours of the day lengthen. You can purchase delphinium seeds here.
Welcome To Grandma’s Cottage Garden
Grandma has added both annual and perennial plants to her Cottage Garden. She has planted lots of roses to the garden plots because they were some of her favorites. She moved from California where roses grew to monstrous heights, towering above her 5’` stature, and grew prolific blooms that she would pick and place in beautiful vases around the house. She would dry them and fill baskets with the buds and then come Christmas time would sit with a needle and upholstery thread and string them together like popcorn and make beautiful garlands of her blossoms swagging them on her Christmas Tree. Here in the hot humid middle Tennessee, she struggled to get her roses to be as successful at first because of the humidity and the amount of rain.
We spent many years planting trees to give us respite from the high temperatures here in the south that we didn’t know near the ocean in Southern California. She planted bulbs in beds that in their season would provide a riot of color and texture to the garden. Hydrangea plants were tucked into the shade of the trees so that in springtime they would produce beautiful balls of flowers.
Here is our Fairy Garden, filled with iris, a hydrangea, lemon balm, mums, and border with a found rock border all tucked beautifully under a peeling birch tree that gives even more texture to this ever-changing bed.
A water fountain beacons to the songbirds to come and find rest and a drink of water on the hot humid days of summer. The dragonflies land on the edges and enjoy a drink of water to quench their thirst.
Bulbs planted in the sunny garden beds charm those that meander the garden paths to drink in the beauty and the peace that comes from this space. Garden benches are spread here and there to allow people to sit and stay awhile. Enjoy the call of the song bird and the song of the waterfall.
Orange lilies thrive in the sunny bed at the cottage preferring full sun to part shade. These lilies and their bright blossoms grow to be three to four feet tall and love to be mulched to preserve the moisture in their beds. The sound of a wind chime tinkling softly in the breeze carries over to you as you sit on the swing and enjoy the peaceful paradise.
Spikes of bright red canna bulbs provide privacy and another room of sorts to our beautiful garden. These cannas line the back of the dining area and provide a sheltered area to enjoy the waterfall and lead down to the girl’s playhouse.
Pretty soft purple iris bulbs capture the late spring rain on their petals and provide an amazingly beautiful view as you enjoy your cup of morning coffee.
Cottage Garden Paths
Hydrangeas line the vinyl picket fence in new and heirloom varieties that make the walk deeper into the garden such a joy. The other side of the pathway has oakleaf hydrangeas that are blocking the view of the next room of our garden retreat, making the reveal a surprise as you turn the corner into that bit of the garden.
Found items make their way into this beautiful landscape. Brick that has been rescued from the building of the Cottage was used to make the pathway through the hydrangeas as you come upon a pond with fish swimming beautifully within it. It begs you to sit and stay awhile and enjoy the amazing peace of running water trickling over smoothed rocks.
Cottage Garden Lighting
Lighting your outdoor space is very important so that you and your guests can enjoy the beauty of the space not just in the light of day but at night as well.
Tiki torches can light up pathways, go around ponds or pools and make a casual statement. Solar or even low-wattage wired lighting adds such a beautiful touch as it lights up the paths, and shines up trees, waterfalls, garden houses, or other garden interests. Sparkling lights look beautiful on trees, shrubs, and gazebos.
Heirloom hydrangea bushes have been planted hither and yon in the cottage garden along with their more modern sisters to add beauty and interest. I had found them at our local grocery store in the floral department on clearance after Mother’s Day and Easter and brought them home.
Mr. Cottage, the wonderful man that he is, endured lovingly my passion for hydrangeas and flowers in general and never discouraged me from getting these beautiful plants and helped the girls and I find beautiful spots for them in the garden to find their homes.
The colors of these standard hydrangeas vary by the pH of the soil they are planted in from white to pink, blue to purple. They sit here at the Cottage under a series of cedar trees and lately when they bloom in spring the flowers are like a watercolor where each flower head will have sections of different colors. They are so very beautiful.
Walls of the Cottage Garden
The walls of the cottage garden are an important aspect. Not only do they add privacy to the garden but a sense of expectation as you leave one section of the garden and enter the next. This provides rooms like the room of your home where you can feature your own items of interest to be revealed as you walk through the garden. The Hydrangea quercifolia or more commonly known as the Oakleaf hydrangeas have been used as a garden wall in this part of the Cottage Garden.
We continue to add to the Cottage Garden when we find new plants that we love or when areas are hit by winter ice storms or summer heat and drought. Here is a newer section of the Cottage Garden with baby hydrangea plants that we found at the garden center on clearance and beautiful tiled garden globes. They seem to make a beautiful statement in the garden that adds interest but not clutter to the garden. What do you think? We keep it tidy and the weeding down by adding a nice layer of brown mulch to the beds when we are done planting. Annual flowers can be added to the edge to increase the color of the bed until the hydrangeas grow into full size.
Knock-Out Roses In The Cottage Garden
Knock Out Roses are a good choice if you are a beginner growing roses. They do not have the issues with bugs and with fungus as the regular roses do so they can be planted in more difficult areas that are more humid. We give them some Rose Tone organic rose food and they are amazing and quite fast-growing.
Adding arbors to your garden adds such a beautiful statement and gazebos can give you a spot to get out of the sunshine and allow you to add a bit of shade to the garden. Add some curved garden benches to the gazebo and you have added a wonderful spot for a prayer section to the garden or a lovely spot to read. Climbing roses trailing up the sides of the gazebo and blowing in the breeze will make a lovely addition. Add some pretty lights to it so that you can enjoy the evenings with your favorite person.
Take some time to find rose varieties that like your growing zone and pick up a few. If you are new to growing roses take a moment to see what roses enjoy and do not like to give them the best chance possible to thrive in their new home.
Make sure to add plants that will be beautiful in different seasons so that the garden will be beautiful and you can enjoy it throughout the year.
