God In The Storm – 6 Powerful Ways To Trust God When The Flood Waters Rise

We’ve all been there, caught in the storm watching the floodwaters rise and wondering how we got here. Where is God in the storm? When my arms are weary and my soul is battered when life stole from me and left me breathless with its brutality.

It’s here, in the midst of the storm when the floodwaters are rising threatening to drowned us that we must decide if we will allow God to use this storm. Or allow it to shatter our faith and drive us away from God. In the midst of the heartache, it can be so easy to allow the storm to make us bitter, to let it drive us away from everything God has planned for our lives.

When it comes down to it, this is a choice we have to make. It can be a tool to refine, shape, and one day God will redeem this broken place. Or it can sweep in like a tornado and destroy everything in its path.

He Is God In The Storm

It may feel like you are all alone in this place. Like no one sees and no one cares but I promise you something. Even in the storm, at the darkest moment of your life when you are hanging on by a thread, He is God in the storm. And because He’s still God in the storm:

  • You can not be lost to Him.
  • Even in the storm, you are held in the palm of His hand.
  • He saw this storm before it ever reached you, and has already worked out the provision you’ll need to get you through.
  • He will see you through.
  • You are His child, and nothing can snatch you from His hands.
  • God is worthy of your trust.

Trusting God In The Midst Of The Storm

It can feel impossible to trust God when you are in the midst of the storm that He knew was coming but did nothing to save us from. But what is so hard to see at this moment, from our perspective is why we had to endure the storm. Trust me I have been through my share of storms, and spent many nights sobbing into my pillow asking God why and I can tell you without a shadow of a doubt there is always, always a reason.

Some of the biggest storms I’ve experienced have become platforms for God to show up big. And pour all of His grace, mercy, and love into the life of another storm battered soul. Sometimes we have to go through the storm so that it strips away everything that we are relying on so that we can meet the one who is God in the storm.

How To Trust God In The Storm

Even knowing that He is God in the storm isn’t always enough in the face of the storm and so we find doubts creeping in. How do you trust God in the storm?

  • Pour your heart out to your heavenly Father. He already knows what your feeling and the thoughts in your head so begin speaking it. It’s ok to be angry, to hurt, and to ask questions. As long as these things don’t sprout into roots of bitterness that will keep us from God.
  • Remember that God hears and answers every prayer, not on our timetable but His, and not always with the answer we want to hear.
  • Pray, spend time in your Bible and begin praying using the verses. (A great resource on prayer would be Fervent, and A Beginner’s Guide to Fast and Pray from our friend Tiffany from Hope & Joy In Christ)
  • Surrender it to God– the storms we face are far too heavy and large for us to deal with on our own, but we were never meant to. Take the burden and lay them at His feet.
  • Focus on God, and that His plan is perfect, and in the end meant for our good. Even when it doesn’t feel like it now.
  • Act as if you do- even if you don’t feel it, even when you have questions. Continue to pray, to seek Him, to spend quiet moments in your Bible. Get connected to your church. Allow Him to fill you in these moments.

Bible Verses About Trusting God In The Storm

Here are some of my favorite Bible verses about faith in hard times, to help you get through the storm. Try using these in your prayers, place your name in each one and let them, minister to your soul as you remember that He is God in the storm.

  1. “When you go through deep waters, I will be with you.” Isaiah 43:2 NLT
  2. “Commit your way to the Lord. Trust in Him, and He will act.” Psalm 37:5 ESV
  3. “I will not cause pain without allowing something new to be born, says the Lord.” Isaiah 66:9 NCV
  4. “He will cover you with His feathers, and under His wings, you will find refuge; His faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.” Psalm 91:4 NIV
  5. “My soul finds rest in God alone, my salvation comes from Him, He alone is my rock and my salvation.” Psalm 62:1-2
  6. “For I know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper you and not harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11 NIV

The One Who Is God In The Storm, Is Your Protector

When we are going through the storm it can be hard to cling to all of the promises we’ve learned throughout the good days. But often the storm is used to compound what we learned when everything was going just right. The truth is we need the storms. As uncomfortable and painful as these seasons are in your life, they grow us and stretch us.

They reaffirm what we know in our hearts, for the next time we go through a storm.  And give us a solid foundation to say with confidence that He is a God in the storm and He will never abandon us.

  6. Thank you for reading stories about testimonies.
I woke up with a dream going through a huge current flood. I thought I was dead but still alive in a dream
I have just moved to a different city to relocate & leave with my Daughter. I am 64 years.
We agreed but as soon as I relocated, staying with her was like hell on earth. Sold my house. Then, what now.
This indent made me to more closer to God. But still I felt alone. No friends or family to talk too. I needed a Christian family to pray for me.
I am happy & I know now finding this column that God still is the same.
We are to buy a house with my daughter.
Please pray that God to help us with less attacks from the devil.
I trust God through Christ Jesus that he will defeat the enemy.
My other son is in the streets with no communication.
My last born son is getting attacks in his job.
Keep me in prayers & my family.

Dearest sister in Christ, I thank God that His Spirit drew me to read this article & your prayer… There is nothing to big for our God to handle. He is in the habit of turning the impossible into possibilities.. He is the way maker, miracle worker, peace maker, deliverer, restorer, provider… So Lord, please be all these & more to your dearest daughter, shine Your light, Your Shalom & hand of protection in her son’s place of work that NO weapon formed against him shall prosper Hallelujah! Jehovah-jireh our great provider, go before my sister & her daughter with Your Spirit of wisdom & protection in their property partnership.
Touch hearts of stone in family members & turn them to flesh so they may hear You Lord & know You love them & want the very best for them even if they can’t see it for themselves. Restore faith to see beyond current circumstances, trusting You the everlasting Almighty Father of heaven & earth to do a good thing in ALL of their lives. This we ask in Jesus mighty name AMEN!! I firmly believe that God is in control but there are times when my troubles become so overwhelming that I don’t even feel like speaking to God. 8. I’m in a storm with my middle child. He went to jail Friday and is still there. He is 19. This has been hard on our whole family. I’m just praying a hedge of protection around him. May God lead guide and direct him. I really won’t have a idea what we are dealing with for possibly a week. This is a time only God can carry me through. I have so many mixed emotions.

    1. Hello Marsha, I’m so sorry to hear that. Father, we lift up Marsha’s son and ask that you will put a hedge of protection around him. So deep, so wide Lord. Use this time of correction to help him see his incredible need for you, his emptiness without you, bring him face to face with his sin. Let him find you there. Let him find salvation and healing and new life in and through you. We lift up Marsha and her family and ask that you comfort them and give them strength to see this through. Wrap your arms around them and hold them close. In Jesus name amen

8 Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.

  14. Hi
I just lost a baby at 6wks,lord knows how hard I prayed for God to save this pregnancy 😭😭it’s really hard to trust God admist all of this😭m hurting ,my faith is shaken
I even said “thy will be done “ am just realizing that this is not as easy, cause God’s will for us is not always what we want at the time…..in all I still give thanks to God.and I believe

    1. Hello Michelle,
We are so sorry to hear of the loss of your precious child. I am not sure what is more painful than losing a child. I struggled with the loss of my own children and know the pain that comes with it. I have 11 children waiting for me in heaven. Oh, the day that I get to wrap my arms around them and tell them that I love them so. I am so thankful that that moment of loss was not a forever goodbye, but my sweet babe and yours was taken up to heaven and that they reside there in perfection waiting for my arrival.
I understand what you are saying when you say your faith has been shaken, mine was too. This think called Faith… it is a moment-by-moment walk we walk with our Savior. God, understands the pain, the anger. He understands our loss as He too gave his only Son that we might be forgiven and have the hope of heaven. The bible tells us that “He is close to the brokenhearted and rescues those that are crushed in spirit.” (Psalm 24:19) So even when I would waiver I know that He never would. He would be close to me. He would rescue me. It was a comfort to me when I remembered that he cared about me as I mourned, that he loved me in my sorrow. The bible says “You keep track of all my sorrows, You have collected all my tears in a bottle, you have recorded each one in your book.” (Psalm 56:8)
One morning when I was feeling particularly low I came out of my room with tear-stained cheeks. I went to the refrigerator to get a glass of water and on the door of my refrigerator, my little girl had put a sticky note. It had little girl writing scrawled across it and the edges were a bit bent but the simple words brought me to my knees. It simply said, “I still trust you,” I collapsed into a puddle of tears on the floor. What faith she had. Was she hurting inside, yes, she sure was But she trusted her Heavenly Father, even when it was the worst pain she had ever experienced. She knew that her father was good. Your Daddy loves you, Michelle. He promises that He will comfort you. Blessed are those who mourn, for they WILL receive comfort.
Don’t stop talking to Him. Keep telling him what is on your heart, tell him what you need. He knows, but he just wants to hear it from you. Let Him comfort you. Let His peace fill you and heal you my friend.

This verse has been such a comfort to me.
Philippians 4:6 Do not be anxious or worried about anything, but in everything [every circumstance and situation] by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, continue to make your [specific] requests known to God. 7 And the peace of God [that peace which reassures the heart, that peace] which transcends all understanding, [that peace which] stands guard over your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus [is yours].

8 Finally, [b]believers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable and worthy of respect, whatever is right and confirmed by God’s word, whatever is pure and wholesome, whatever is lovely and brings peace, whatever is admirable and of good repute; if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think continually on these things [center your mind on them, and implant them in your heart]. Amplified version

Father, I lift up Michelle to you. She is struggling Lord. Her heart is shattered and she needs your healing touch. She needs the comfort that you alone can provide Lord. She needs your peace that surpasses all human understanding. We ask for that today Lord. In Jesus name, amen.

Now I will give you my list for you to think on and thank God for until you have your own. It is true that I am so glad that you wrote. It is honorable that someone at the market today paid for a stranger’s groceries when they lost their credit card. It is right that God’s love for us is complete and it does not depend on us because he first loved us. Pure- the love and trust of my child in her Heavenly Father. Lovely is my garden when it is in full bloom where I can sit and read His Word and meditate on it. It is admirable those that give their lives for others. Excellent – Well that is The sky outside my home painted by the hand of God as the sun begins to set. Praiseworthy- That is our God, the Lord Jesus Christ… Oh, how I love him!

Keep in touch friend! We love you.

  23. Mary Helen Lopez

Thank you for your inspirational post. I truly needed to hear that. My niece passed away at the age of 48, 8 days shy of her 49th birthday due to Covid complications in April 2022. She was a single mom and left behind a 13-year old boy. His father has a few days to live. I was close to his father. He accepted Jesus recently in his heart. He is now 14-years of age. He will be an orphan. My sister has gained custody of the child. My sister needs alot of prayer because she is very bitter and angry within herself because she was never a mother to her grandson’s mother and and hates our family. She is a believer. I was with her grandson from birth to 13 years of age and they’ve blocked all communication from me since May of 2022. Please pray for my sister and her son and 2 daughters that need forgiveness in their heart towards me and the family.

    1. You’re welcome Mary. I am so sorry for your losses. That is just heart breaking. Father, we lift up Mary’s family to you and ask you to comfort them all in these terrible losses. We lift up her nephew to you and ask that you have your hand upon him and let him become a mighty man of God. We ask you to do amazing things in his life and through him. We lift up his aunt to you and ask that you touch her heart. We ask that the fruits of your Holy Spirit grow within her heart and that you soften the hard and bitter parts and allow healing to come. Your word says that “And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.” We pray this for her and for her daughters. That you will give them a chance to heal and have a softened and loving heart. Bring peace and love into this family Lord. We pray for provision for them and blessing. In Jesus name, amen.
