How To Surrender To God
We hear a lot about “surrender” but what does that really mean? Today we are going to really break it down in a quest to learn how to surrender to God and let go of our plans. It’s so important to make sure our plans are in line with God’s, especially around this time of year as we step into the New Year.
If you are anything like me you’ve been doing a fair share of planning over the last few weeks, so I thought this would be a timely moment to dive into the subject of how to surrender to God and let go of our plans.
What Does It Mean To Surrender To God?
Surrendering to God means letting go of our plans, and letting God have His way in every aspect of our lives. Allowing Him to guide our steps and direct our decisions. As Christians this means we surrender our will for His perfect will, and follow God.
Why Do We Need To Surrender To God?
Full surrender to God means that we accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior, when we become Christians we must surrender our life to Him. We are not meant to keep certain parts back but surrender our whole life to Him in an act of obedience and complete trust.
How Do You Surrender To God Spiritually?
As Christians, we are called to turn over every aspect of our lives to God’s control, but how do you surrender to God spiritually? There is no one-step way to surrender to God, it’s a daily, moment by moment choice to give it to God. Here are some ways that you can surrender to God spiritually:

Surrendering To God Through Prayer
When we are trying to let go, and let God direct our planning, it’s really important that we spend time in prayer. Why is prayer important? Because it,
- It’s the first step when it comes to how to surrender to God and let go.
- Changes our perspective.
- Shifts our focus to our Creator.
- Is a direct line to God.
- Places our plans before Him as we seek direction.
- It reminds us to rely on Him.
- It allows us to seek His will.
Let Go And Let God Direct Our Plans: Seek God Will
The best way to seek God’s will when you are trying to let go and let God direct your step is to spend time in your Bible. The Bible is the living, breathing word of God which makes it the best way to spend time with him. As you read your Bible you’ll be able to decide if
- your plans line up with God’s.
- If your goals are Godly ones.
- And often find direction as you seek how to surrender to God and let go of your plans.
How To Surrender To God and Let Go: Seek Godly Counsel
The next step in how to surrender to God and let go of our plans is to seek out godly Christians that we trust and listen to their counsel. They will be able to pour into your life and are often removed from the situation enough that they can bring a fresh view to the table as you let go and let God direct your steps.
At the very least these people can pray for you as you seek God’s will in your life and planning.
Let Go and Let God: Fasting
Fasting goes hand in hand with prayer, as you seek how to surrender to God and let Him lead you.
Here are some great reads on fasting:
How To Surrender To God: Wait
Sometimes when we are trying to figure out how to surrender to God and let go of our plans, we forget that we need to wait on God. We can’t just throw up a prayer, get some advice, and charge ahead. We need to be in step with God so that not only did we seek Him in the planning, but also in the timing.
While you’re in the waiting stages of surrender, focus on the prayer, spending time in the word, and keep doing the last thing He told you to do.
Bible Verses On Surrendering To God
These are some of our favorite Bible verses about surrendering to God to help you let go of your plans and let God take control:
- Lead me in your truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; for you I wait all the day long. Psalm 25:5 ESV
- Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. Proverbs 3:5-6
- I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Romans 12:1
- And those who know your name put their trust in you, for you, O Lord, have not forsaken those who seek you. Psalm 9:10
- “Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!” Psalm 46:10
- Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. James 4:7
- Casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you. 1 Peter 5:7
Surrendering To God and Letting Go
Surrendering and letting go is never going to be easy, our natural instincts urge us to move on with our plans and our timetable. And sometimes we make a plan assuming that it’s Gods, and try to force Him into it. But this isn’t surrender, and can only end in pain, frustration, and heartbreak.
Let go of your plans, and let God direct your path. He has had a plan for your life since the beginning of time, no step along your journey has been missed. Trust Him, and surrender your plans before Him as a sacrifice to your savior.

You’re welcome my friend.
I love your posts so much!! Thank you for this, really needed it..God bless you and your families
I remember when a prophetic word about surrender was spoken in my church. I knew it was for me. I was too afraid because i thought it ws a bad thing now i know it wasnt. I thought if i surrendered God would take everything away you see it was the first time in years my husband actually had a decent job but my husband being who he is he lost it. Thats when i gave up and decided if i wanted a roof over mine and my childrens head it would be up to me. So i worked long hours to provide. My husband went on like he always does losing jobs and spending money. Now he is totally disabled and still making wrong decisions. He betrays me with spending and hiding financial decisions. I am still working long hours to provide. I feel like Abraham who chose to do it his way. I feel hopeless and that it is too late. Can God forgive me for my unfaithfulness? Will he? Is it too late to change my circumstances? I have no love or respect for my husband i just exist. I attend church but not on a regular basis and do not have anyone to confide in.
I wish I could give you a great big hug Vickie. It is never too late. Never, as long as we are alive. Many fear that, but God is not that way. What he wants for us is more than we could even imagine. He is such a good Father. He is a provider, he is the lover of our soul. I am sorry that your husband has disappointed you and betrayed you but know that your Daddy, your Abba, your Father God never will. God can and will forgive you. His arms are open wide. Run to him, Vickie. Run into his loving arms and experience his love and forgiveness. Get back into a good bible teaching church. Seek his will for you and your children. Teach them about their loving Father in heaven. Father, we lift up our friend Vickie. We ask you to help her to come to you. We thank you for calling her. Help her to fall in love with you. Help her to not be distracted. Keep the devil and his lies from her. Help her to run with all she is and all she has into your arms. Help her to teach her children to love you with all their heart, souls and minds. I lift up her marriage to you. Help her husband find you and give himself fully to you. Restore their marriage Lord. Give them a renewed love for one another. In Jesus name, Amen.
Vickie, i am sorry to hear that you are going this hard time with you family financially. To answer your question about God forgiving you, yes he can forgive. go before him confess all that you have done that you believe has brought you to this place of hopelessness. He said if we confess our sins and repent from them, he is faith and just to forgive us our sins. I want to let you know that there is a good news for you, Jesus said he did not come for those who are whole, but he came for the sick. Be rest assured that Jesus loves you and is waiting for you come closer to him. I pray that he Lord help you and your family to be financially stable in Jesus name. I do understand that feeling or longing to talk to someone when when you desperately need it, However, go and talk to the Lord and share your burdens to him, he is waiting for you to surrender and return home.
I am so glad you answered my question online. Thank you.

Thank you. That really helped me a lot. I am a Christian who reverted back to my old sinful ways and it has been eating away at me inside. My father die due to covid 19 just this September. Now no one works for us and we are desperate to earn some money in order to support us. I don’t know what God is planning to do with us and I’m not really sure where are we going to do now that my father is gone. I am really pressured right now due to the fact that I’m the older son so the responsibility is now mine to bare. To be honest I am not ready yet. I’m far from ready but I need to face the truth that now everything that I know will change. Somethings that I used to enjoy will be gone and the plan I make is really wasn’t meant to be. I guess its my fault for thinking that but I can’t help. My plan before was to gather experience from the things I encounter and improve on it. I guess God want me to move right now, to make a decision, and to not waste anymore of my time in this world. Sometimes I think what if all this happen due to that very reason. Maybe if this thing didn’t happen then I will never reach my dreams. Dreams that I think come from Him. It started way back in my first years in highschool and even until now that I just finished it. It’s all I think everyday and I always ask God to help me achieve it, to prepare me, and to help me make it come true. I am sad that my father die and I’m really lost right now maybe because I’m really stressed by the demands my mother who wants me to be better in an instant. She always compare me with other people and she never really care about how I think of things. She just want to do it in her way and she never ask about mine. I always listen to her, I always try to put everything that she say in me and I never complain with the things that she want me to do even it bothers me in some way. It just feel unfair that things are like that. I’m just tired and I want to lay down without any problem to bother me. It’s just to much to me at the moment and I can fell Im about to get insane. The only thing I’m holding is that dream He gave me and I will always try to reach it even until the very end. The road to it might be tough and I don’t know if I will really reach it because maybe somethings stop me again but I will always choose that all the time because I believe that is the purpose He gave to me.
Hello Ace, I am so sorry to hear of your loss. The loss of a loved one is never easy, but the loss of a parent is even harder. I can’t tell you what God’s plan is, only that He is faithful, and promised to be our provider. God doesn’t wait for us to feel ready, instead, He calls us to the role He has for us and equips us in that role. I think it’s part of learning to rely on Him in every season. I am so sorry you have this heavy burden on your shoulders, but please remember God promises to carry our burdens for us. I know it feels like your world is crumbling right now, but hang on to Him. He is the only thing that will never change. Would you like to tell me about your dream? Praying for you my friend. ~ Cheyenne, Rosevine Cottage Girls

Aunty I am not an American but I know you will understand. I just gave my life to Christ this evening and I browsed I’m so happy to see your messages please inform me more on how to have God in me because I have so many questions in my mind.
Hello Miracle, I’m so glad that you found us and happy to hear that you gave your life to Christ. I am so proud of you my friend. Do you have a Bible? I would suggest that you begin reading through it, begin in the New Testament I would start with the Book of Luke or John. Spend time reading the Bible every day, and talk to Jesus every day. Put Jesus first in your life. Find other Christians that can mentor you, and pray with you.
Would you like to email me some of your questions? We will do our best to help answer them. You can email me at rosevinecottagegirls@gmail.com

Hi 👋🏾 I’m kaliyah just turned 13 a couple of days ago. I wanted to come on here and talk about a couple of things. First I’ve been dealing with listful thoughts and I know it’s not good because I’m young and shouldn’t even be thinking like that but because of social media I have and it sucks. Second I have gotten into repenting and saying sorry and I know God forgives me but it’s hard to forgive myself if feel like after I sin God just doesn’t want me anymore and I know it’s not trues but it just feels like it. Third I want to be saved and find things on the internet that help with trying but I don’t feel saved, also I’ve been getting into reading the New Testament but sometimes it scares me to read my Bible because I’m scared of the part that have hell and sin in it but I know I have to read it. I just don’t want God to be mad if I don’t read it but I have no other way to get closer to him or so I think. Fourth I want to also learn hot to love God more I love Jesus a lot already I mean I’m the New Testament you can see how good of a man he truly is and I’ve also been crying a lot about just everything and o feel his presence and just want to give him a big hug. Things just make me sad because all I can think of is how I wanna be in heaven dancing in a field of flowers with Jesus but I’m stuck here with negative thoughts. I’ve gotten better with the sinful thoughts because now they just make me feel bad which makes me not want to do them at all. Anyway I’m so sorry I ranted but I just need help because I know In all Jesus and God just want a honest and healthy relationship it’s just hard to do because sometimes I feel like I’m too young for this.
This is a great post! I’ve been struggling with surrendering to God lately and this post has really helped me to understand what it means and how to do it. Thank you!
