Want to make the perfect apple pie like grandma did? Look no further than this simple and delicious recipe. This is a wonderful recipe if you’ve never baked a pie before, or a season pro looking for something new.
We found this recipe amongst a stack of faded recipe cards, yellowed with time and splattered with memories. It’s a treasure like this – simple, old fashioned, a relic of a by gone age that makes you think of grandma in a faded apron bustling around her kitched- that must be tried! After the first bite we decided that this is the perfect apple pie recipe. The crust is delicious and flaky and the apples are perfectly spiced. It is such a light pie crust and not a cumbersome thick covering. It went together very easily and transferred over to our pie to crown the apples really well without tearing or causing much grief.

Perfect Apple Pie – Pie Crust
- 3 cups flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 1/8 cup of lard
(yes, we did actually use lard. We made our own and it came out great. Use any solid at room temperature oil but lard is amazing)
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon of vinegar
- 7 tablespoons of water
Using the pastry knife or two forks using a scissor motion cut lard in with the flour and Himalayan pink salt. It will look like a course meal when you are done
In a separate bowl, break an egg, measure your vinegar, and the water into the bowl. Stir this well. Pour it all over the flour mixture and mix it up quite well.
The dough will be a little sticky but never fear, it will come off great . Get a clean flour sack towel or other clean lint free fabric and lay it out on your clean counter top. Sprinkle it with flour and spread it out in a circle as big as your pastry will need to be. Take half of the dough out of your bowl and place it on your floured cloth. Take your rolling pin and give it a little flour on the surface to keep it from sticking. Begin to roll out on the cloth until it is the size that you need. Roll around like following a clock so that it will form a circle and not a square. When it is the size and thickness you need, large enough to cover the sides and bottom of the pie dish easily pick up the cloth with the pastry on it carefully. Center it over the pie pan and carefully place it down on the pie pan.
Pour apple mixture into the dish.
Take a the rest of the ball of dough and roll it out on the floured cloth – this only needs to be the size of the opening of the pie dish so it is smaller than the first piece that you did.. Cut venting holes like bird tracks into this piece of dough after you have it rolled out to the size you need. Place this on top of the apples, then pinch ends together – squeezing/pinching the dough between the forefinger and thumbs.
Use any juice left from the apple mixture in the bowl to sprinkle on top of the pie – it makes it prettier.
Cook for 1 hour at 350 degrees F.
