Tattler canning lids are reusable canning lids which means you don’t have to throw them out after you use them. Which means you are saving money on your canning lids. No summer is complete with out burns from splashing yourself with hot water, red fingers from removing jars from the oven, sore feet from hours- ok weekends on your feet canning, T-Shirts splattered with pureed tomato, dyed fingernails from peeling tomatoes, hours of joking, and laughing as we drop the ladle into the stockpot full of tomatoes for the third time in a row, singing along to whatever happens to be on the radio and laughing at just how off-key we are and dreaming about our “perfect” kitchen.
We have such good memories of canning. Like the one year while we were canning apples my sister slipped and sat into the big stockpot of apples and water, waiting to be canned in her ‘Winnie the Pooh’ PJ’s. I guess she thought it was a stool. We still laugh about that moment today.
Why Can’t You Reuse Canning Lids?
Regular canning jar lids such as Ball, and Kerr were not made to be used again after their first use and it’s not recommended by experts to reuse these canning jar lids because the gasket compound in used lids may fail to seal on your canning jars, resulting in unsafe food. When the canning jars are processed, the gasket on a new lid softens and flows slightly to cover the jar-sealing surface.

Reusable Canning Lids Review
With all the canning we do here at the Cottage to say we go through a lot of lids is an understatement. A big one. And although we do have fun coming up with things to do with the lids like plant tags, there is only so much you can do with spent lids, couple that with the price of canning jar lids and the canning lid shortage of 2020. We went to every store near us and every single one was sold out before the canning season had fully descended on us. We were so glad to know we had a stockpile of reusable canning jar lids to get us through the season.
We bought our first batch of these wonderful lids 7 years ago, and have continued to add to our collection ever since. It’s so nice to not have to throw our lids out after the first use. Less waste, saving money, does it get any better? At some point, our gaskets will need to be replaced (haven’t had to after 7 years of using the first batch) but the lids are doing a great job. They have a great seal rate, which is another wonderful thing.
You can find them on Lehman’s and Amazon.
How Do You Use Tattler Reusable Canning Jar Lids?
Fill your clean and sterilized jars with food, wipe the rim of your jar clean, and then place the rubber gasket on the rim of the jar. Place the Tattler lid on top of the rubber gasket. Cover the lid and gasket with a metal ring and tighten until secure but don’t overtighten it. Can as you would with regular canning jar lids.
