Giving To God: The Empty Christmas Stocking

Giving to God may seem like a strange concept on Christmas, the day God gave His greatest gift to mankind. But should it be? In all the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, I think we often forget what is so special about this season. We remember our loved ones, our friends even our delivery person, but do we forget the one who gave us the greatest gift?

Every Christmas morning from the time I was very small to now, my sister and I would clatter (we’re a bit more graceful now) down the stairs in our Christmas Eve pajamas and scurry into the living room to open our stockings. Of all of our Christmas traditions, this is my favorite.

The whole family gathers around the fireplace and carefully lifts a stocking from a nail in the mantel stuffed to the brim with carefully wrapped little packages, bright red apples, and delicious sweet oranges. We giggle and laugh as we enjoy our time together slowly taking turns opening each thing.

Giving To God – In The Quiet Moments

These quiet Christmas mornings will always be my favorite I think, the simplicity, the joy as every thoughtful present is revealed the dogs waiting expectantly at our feet sure that there is some goody wrapped inside the pretty paper parcels for them.  We sit around and laugh and enjoy just being together, and watching each other open gifts – we have a rule only one person can open a gift at a time that way everyone can watch-.

Over the years stocking has been added and taken away, but that childlike wonder still wraps each one beckoning you back to bygone days. These will always be warm, sparkling beautiful memories for me. But have we left one stocking empty and forgotten about in the business of memory-making?

Giving To God – What Is Christmas Really About?

What is Christmas really about? God, recklessly with loving abandon came to earth as a baby, to meet us just where we are. Knowing that he’d be rejected, He came anyway. He came to write a love story across the fabric of time, and break every chain that binds us, and step through the threads of eternity to save us. This is what Christmas is.  Remember that He came to seek you out, to find you right where you are.  This is why Christmas is important.

Giving Back To God This Christmas

We remember to get everyone something, the relatives, the postman, the teachers at school, co-workers and friends- but there is someone we so often forget. We neglect to fill His stocking- we forget to even hang it on His birthday. Somehow in the shuffle and gifting of the holidays, the baby whose birth we are celebrating gets lost.

Let’s ask ourselves what He would wish for most, and then, each bring that as the Wisemen did and place it at his feet. What will you bring?

Love?

Thanksgiving?

Worship?

Devotion?

Patience?

Faith?

Forgiveness?

Trust?

These are the gifts we should be giving to God this Christmas and fill His stocking.

Giving Back To God – How To Give Back To God:

Giving to God is something we should do every day, but especially as we celebrate this special time of year. How do you give to God?

  • Check your heart: this shouldn’t be a sacrifice but a joy.
  • Start a journal of what God is doing in your life, including your prayers, what you are thankful for, etc. This will help to keep you focused on Him.
  • When giving to God, the best gift you could give Him is time. Spend time in your Bible, in prayer and worship.

Giving To God This Holiday Season

Let’s not forget our savior this Christmas, come, let us place those gifts in His stocking. Let us surrender our hearts and lives this Christmas and bring them as our humble offering. A gift for our king.  What have you and I been holding back, like a toddler gripping a chip of stone refusing to open our hands to receive the diamond being held out to us?

Giving to God is something we can and should do all year long, but let’s not forget Him this season. Open your stocking and allow His peace to flood your life- but don’t forget to fill His stocking. It’s His birthday, after all.
