We like to start most of what we grow in our greenhouse, but that isn’t absolutely necessary. You can still plant things in April without a greenhouse.

Starting a garden is wonderful! The ability to grow your own food is a huge blessing, but where do you start? The first step is figuring out what growing zone you are in. Here in Tennessee, we are in zone 7, you can find out what your growing zone is by visiting Burpee’s Growing Zone Map and putting in your zip code.

Once you know what growing season you are in you can figure out what to plant in April. We’ve listed the most common veggies by the growing zone below.

 

What To Plant In April in Zone 3

 

Growing this far north you are going to want to start many of these things in a greenhouse or window sill (or even in your garage) to get a head start on your growing season.

If you are starting a garden in zone 4, you’ll most likely want to start many of this inside so that when warmer weather does arrive you have them ready to be transplanted out into the garden.

  • Spinach
  • Potatoes
  • Lettuce
  • Peas
  • Bush beans (after April 24th)
  • Cabbage
  • Carrots (early April)
  • Broccoli (early April)
  • Beets

What to plant in zone 6 in April:

 

  • Asparagus (up to April 25th)
  • Spinach
  • Potatoes
  • Lettuce
  • Peas
  • Bush beans (after April 24th)
  • Cabbage
  • Carrots (early April)
  • Broccoli (early April)
  • Beets

 

You can start these in a greenhouse or inside before transplanting them out into the garden. You can also cover them with garden fleece to protect them from frosts and keep them a bit warmer.  Others like peas can be started out in your garden.

Zone 8 is our planting zone, but even before we can plant these veggies out in the garden we start them in our greenhouse 4-8 weeks depending on the plant before. This gives us a great jump start on the season and lets us start off with hardy plants in the garden.
