When The World Says You’re Not Enough

You’re Not Enough! Have you ever been told that? You are not alone

Israel had been attacked by its enemies. The walls were destroyed, the gates burned and it was abandoned and the people are taken away into captivity in a foreign land. Nehemiah’s heart was absolutely broken knowing that his home was destroyed.   God blessed him with favor with the king and he got permission to return to Jerusalem and repair the walls and restore their beautiful city.

You would think that with the king’s permission that they would receive respect, receive honor for being faithful, a bit of fear of not wanting to mess with the will and the orders of the king.  Let’s look at what happened though.

When Sanballat heard that we were rebuilding the wall, he became angry and was greatly incensed. He ridiculed the Jews,  and in the presence of his associates and the army of Samaria, he said, “What are those feeble Jews doing? Will they restore their wall? Will they offer sacrifices? Will they finish in a day? Can they bring the stones back to life from those heaps of rubble—burned as they are?” Nehemiah 4:1-2 NIV

Who You? You’re Not Enough For That Job!

In essence, he was telling them, they were not enough. Can you imagine that? Stamped with the king’s seal of approval on the job and the king’s money and resources they were all still were too small, too insignificant, too unnoticeable to be anything. How dare they!

How many times in our lives have we run into this same sentiment?

Whether from a “well-meaning” friend- like one of mine, when I told them I wanted to publish the book I was writing. She chuckled slightly and said “Were just kids, we can’t do something like that!”

You Are Not Enough – But When God Calls You To It

Well, guess what, when God calls you to do something, even something that seems HUGE to you and to them (like building a wall around a sacked city or a kid writing a book that God called them to write. If God is behind it, if He is calling you to the job…

You. Are. Enough.

Because you are His, and through your weakness, your inability, your tinyness, your willingness to sacrifice your will, He shines through.

Like light held up to a tattered cloth, He shines through the holes, the broken places. You are enough- because He is enough. You’re enough because your creator looked at you and said, You. Were. Enough. You were good, his treasured creation, his child.

He doesn’t see what the world sees- he doesn’t see the freckles, the size of your jeans, the frizzy hair, the lanky build or the short. He sees your heart, and he loves you no matter what the wrappings look like. In your willingness to serve THE King of Kings you are a jewel, priceless to Him.
