You’re here once more, your whole world going up in ashes and wondering where God is when you are engulfed in flames. He feels so far away, you struggle even to catch a small glimpse of Him among the shimmering waves of heat. ‘Has He forgotten me?’ you wonder, was my mess just too much? Was I just too broken for Him to do anything with? Far too many pieces scatter across this wasteland you’ve journeyed through for so long for Him to bother with- I promise you dear friend this isn’t true.
Throughout scripture, we see the promise that God will never leave nor abandon you. But we also see the promise that when you walk through the fire, when you are engulfed in flames He will not leave you here. You will not be lost in this place. He has not left you, you aren’t too broken, or messy or anything else the devil has whispered in your ears to try to get you to give up. Even in the midst of the fire, you are firmly held in His hand.

When You Are Engulfed In Flames
The devil tries to make us feel alone. He drives us away from anything that can feed our weary souls a shred of hope and drives us into isolation especially when we are engulfed in flames. If he can starve our souls we are that much easier to break down. When we are so focused on the flames, and on the pain, we experience it can be so hard to see God, and we are left wondering if He’s abandoned us.
It’s so important that before we ever get to this season we have done everything we can to grow our roots deep into God’s word and build a solid foundation of truth. Nothing will burn away faster when you are engulfed in flames then catchy feel-good quotes and false hope which is why we need God’s word not just people’s “Christiany” sounding thoughts.
When we are in the midst of the flames it’s vital that we cling that much tighter to the truth, we are loved, we are treasured, He has a plan for our lives. Cling to those truths even when it feels like God is far away because your feelings can and often are wrong.
Finding God When You Walk Through The Fire
I remember this time our family was walking through a storm, one thing after the next kept happening and it just felt like we couldn’t catch our breath. The air conditioning went out in the middle of our hot and muggy southern summer, we had not one but two really bad water leak that required gutting huge pieces of the house. A family member’s health was deteriorating, a horrible car accident, the loss of precious animals.
I remember just laying on the floor in the bedroom listening to a song talking about how God is faithful, and if He’s started to work in your life He will be faithful to complete it. That song was a shred of hope that I desperately needed when it felt like I was engulfed in flames.
Trust me I get it, it can be so hard to find God when you walking through the fire. The doubts and fears shriek in your ears, the situation overwhelms you so that you can’t see anything else. You look for Him, try to find the slightest piece of His fingerprint but it’s so hard to find them at that moment. But I can promise you, He’s there. You. Are. Not. Alone. He sees you, you are not lost to Him. Even in the inferno, when everything around you is turning to ash you are held firmly in God’s hands.
God Is With You In The Fire
God uses the fire, the storms, the circumstances we go through for a purpose. He uses them to chip away the rough places, to burn away the worldly places, to mold us into who He created us to be. He brings us into the fire and allows us to be engulfed in flames to refine us. To remove the unwanted elements and impurities so that all that remains is himself. Trust Him. He is a master craftsman and you are His treasured creation. He will not leave you in the midst of the flames.
